A very difficult album. After RCA dropped the band, Bud Prager, manager of Foreigner, got the band a deal with Atlantic. But there was no money to support the band so the guys had to get jobs. Initially Terry had to write the album in isolation and the brief was very clear: American AOR/Top 40 rock. However, as musical trends changed so did the A&R requirement: write a Bad Company song, no write an Asia song, no we need a song like Duran Duran… ' It took some period of time to come up with an album’s worth of songs with this kind of shifting focus. In addition it was decided by the management that Terry was not the singer we needed so we had to get in a proper ‘Rock’ singer and, after auditions, Terry Slessor was picked. Terry then produced three songs and was told, simultaneously, that he was not good enough to do the album but that the songs were terrific. Atlantic then hired Kevin Beamish (REO Speedwagon) to co- produce.

The album took a long time to record as there was so much input - Beamish was an engineer and had no creative contribution. We started to mix in London at Eel Pie Island studios (owned by Pete Townsend) but the mixes were disastrous and so Kevin was relieved of his duties and the album was mixed in New York by David Thoener and Terry Thomas.

Memories: song takes getting up to 'take 26'...Mutt Lange coming in to sing
backing vocals. Taking three hours to get the opening line of It's Inevitable. Terry trying to play guitar parts with his new custom built guitar that had a warped neck.
