Fight Dirty had been finished in February of 1979, at which point the US label, Janus Records, went bankrupt so the record lay dormant until Arista picked up the catalogue and released the album in September of 1979.
The Knack released My Sharona that year and American radio programming was shifting away from ‘produced’ records like Fight Dirty towards a more basic and raw sound. Like… this record. Or so we thought.
This album was recorded in a somewhat strange atmosphere without the support of our friends at Janus; to be replaced by Clive Davis’ my way or the highway school of A&R and record production. There were no epics on Here Comes Trouble, no strings, no brass. Just sharp songs. Clive Davis didn't like the album, though, and in a memorable meeting at his hotel in London he told us that we should write 3 AOR/Top 40 crossover hits to complete the album. Terry said that if he could do that to order this conversation wouldn't be taking place. Upon demurring to go back to the drawing board, Julian recollects Clive telling him he’s never work in the business again - a point Julian somewhat wimpily failed to remind Mr. Golden Ears of when they next met in 1989 as Clive presented him with a gold record for his work with the Yes supergroup ABWH.
But you don’t fight (dirty or otherwise) with Clive Davis and win. Arista declined to release the album and, with no US release in sight, nor would Polydor. Our caring management then obligingly dumped us, squirreling away a lot our equipment in the process.
